Rose Cottage is a charming detached period property which dates back in part to the early nineteenth century, having since been extended twice, latterly in 2000 with the addition of the delightful country kitchen with Aga with bedroom above. The cottage has much character and features some oak flooring and oak staircase as well as many exposed timbers. Generous reception space is offered, with a good sized sitting room in addition to a dining room and study. The sitting room features a fireplace at each end, one with wood burning stove. The utility room has plumbing for washing machine and tumble dryer as well as having a downstairs WC. The first floor again has a wonderful feel with a great deal of character and offers 3 bedrooms and family bathroom with both a shower and a bath. The master bedroom again features a wood burning stove and lovely country views and also benefits from a generous adjoining dressing room and en-suite bathroom.
We understand that Sir Osbert Lancaster the much respected cartoonist and writer lived here for many years with his wife Lady Lancaster, better known as the author Anne Scott-James who featured the wonderful gardens within her works.
Aldworth is a picturesque village idyllically located within the Ridgeway of the Berkshire Downs in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The parish includes two public houses (the Four Points and the Bell Inn) and St. Mary's church which is the resting place of the renowned Aldworth Giants, dating from the 13th Century. There is also a village hall with adjoining cricket field. Aldworth lies approximately 3 miles from picturesque Streatley and Goring-on-Thames, with the latter offering a good range of shops and amenities as well as a mainline station to Reading and London Paddington. More local grocery shopping is available at the local farm shops which sell fresh produce. Both Newbury and Reading are both about 10 miles away with extensive shopping and recreational facilities. Aldworth sits in the catchments for Downs School (secondary) and Compton School (primary) as well as having an excellent selection of private schooling in the area.
To the front of the cottage is a pretty front garden with picket fence and some mature hedging. To the rear is a 3 bay detached timber framed garage with studio room over which has an adjoining parking area for a number of cars. The mature grounds are quite delightful with a variety of shrubs and trees and with different areas of interest including an area which was formerly a grassed tennis court. There is a good sized elevated dining terrace, the ideal spot from which to enjoy views of the garden. There is also a useful wood store which adjoins the cottage. The grounds extend to approximately 3/4 acre overall.
